MISSON: Achor Valley

Excerpt 3

Ice coursed down through my veins starting at the point of my captor’s
touch. The last thing I saw before the black hood was put over my head
was Esso standing, taking two steps, and covering the knife with her
boot. My captor grabbed tightly under my arm and half-dragged me
down the hall.

“No need to be so rough,” Esso yelled.

“I’ll be back for you.” The stench of my captor’s breath caused
me to gag.

Lord, be with me,” I prayed silently.

I am with you always, even to the very end of the age.” The code came
into my head instantly. I remembered these were the very words the
King had spoken to me in the throne room. Peace flooded through me.

What should I say?

Tell the truth.” This time the words in my mind were accompanied
by a rumbling of the floor.

Men and prisoners gave shouts and yells. I was escorted into a room,
forced to sit on a chair. The hood was taken off, and a bright light shone
directly in my eyes.

“Who are you and why are you here?”

“My name is Siege. I am part of a medical mission.”

“How did you get here?”

“We hiked in.”

“Let me rephrase. How did you get into a guarded prison?”

“Through a window on the side of the building.”

Laughter echoed through the room. “How did you get in the
window? It’s ten feet off the ground.”

“I stood on someone’s shoulders.”

A man cleared his throat. “I see. And did this person follow you in?”

“No.”

“Where is this person now?”

“I don’t know.”

“What’s this person’s name?”

“Sarg.”

“And you have no idea where this person is right now?”

“He’s somewhere outside the prison. That’s all I know.”

“You know we have ways of making you talk.”

“I’m telling you the truth.” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I pictured the King in the garden.

“This one’s too small to be a threat. Throw her in one of the prison
cells. Call the judge. We’ll hold a trial immediately.”
